At Maryville College, Wyche excelled in academics and also in track. He was the student athlete that was part of the first integrated track team, and at that time, a lot of the white Colleges and Universities wouldn’t compete against Maryville because of him. One of those schools was Georgia Tech. He was the first African American to letter in inter-collegiate sports in the South after integration. A plaque is placed in the student union building with the names of the six students, known as the “Maryville Six” who reintegrated Maryville College in 1954, after the historic United States Supreme Court Decision, Brown v Board of Education. While in college, he met Anna Augusta McCleskey, and later married her on September 10, 1955. After their marriage, Wyche went back into the Air Force.

Wyche would later earn his Bachelor of Arts Degree in Psychology from the University of Houston in Texas; a Master’s Degree from New York Theological Seminary; and Doctorate degrees were conferred by Faith College in Birmingham, Alabama. He also is a graduate of the U. S. Air Force, Air Traffic Control School, serving 12 years as an Air Traffic Controller during the time of the Berlin Airlift and cold war in Germany, North Africa and France. He later served 18 years in Hospital Administration at Ellington Air Base in Houston, Texas and Homestead AFB in Florida. After sending the air transportable hospital to Saudi Arabia and 30 years of honorable service, Master Sergeant Wyche formally retired from the United States Air Force, in 1990, 3 days before Desert Storm. He also has membership with the American Legion Post 165.

Before coming to the Liberty City Church of Christ in 1978 where he served as Minister for 39 years and Minister Emeritus since 2017, Wyche served as Minister for the Third Ward Church of Christ in Houston, Texas; Buellton Church of Christ in Buellton, California; and has preached to thousands over the world including Germany, France, North Africa, England, the Caribbean, Korea, Israel and throughout the United States and now has been seen all over the world wide web and social media. The Miami Herald referred to Dr. Wyche as an icon in Miami’s Christian Community.

Wyche is one of the unsung heroes of the Miami Dade County Community. He has chaired and or served on the boards of many civic and educational organizations and has been recognized and awarded several honors by them. They include the Alliance for Aging, Inc., John H. Peavey Adolescent Health Center, Miami Northwestern Senior High School; Grandparents Raising Grandchildren; State of Florida Department of Elder Affairs Advisory Council; Miami-Dade Independent Review Panel; Urban League of Greater Miami; Dade County Council PTA/PTSA; Florida State PTA/PTSA; Take Stock in Children; Carver YMCA; Family Christian Association of America; Pastoral Services, Jackson Memorial Hospital; African American Council for Christian Clergy; National Conference for Christians And Jews. He was instrumental in creating the PTSA Advocacy Program while serving with the PTSA and was the founding Chairman of the Board for the Family Christian Association of America.

Wyche was married to Anna McCleskey for 66 years until her passing in 2022. They have three grown children, six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

A man who loves God and life, Wyche enjoys fishing, reading, bowling, golf and solving word puzzles and games. Although retired, he will continue to preach, in his role as Minister Emeritus at the Liberty City Church of Christ, (Miami, Florida) and lecture and serve, spreading the gospel throughout the land.
