In 1939, Brother B.J. Black, an Elder at the 12th Street Church of Christ in Overtown, envisioned the idea of a new congregation in the Liberty City area. There were no buses and few people had cars. Therefore, the first meetings were held in the home of Brother and Sister Lloyd Hadley. Subsequent meetings were in the homes and yards of Bother and Sister Martin Simmons, and Brother and Sister B.J. Black. Soon their homes became too small due to the rapid growth of the congregation.
In 1941, the present property was purchased and the first meeting place was built. Brother Lloyd Hadley became the first minister of the congregation. The church grew rapidly with members coming from the 12th Street church, and others who were baptized by ministers John R. Vaughner and Marshall Keeble, traveling evangelists. Some of the pioneer members of the Liberty City Church of Christ were Brother and Sister B.J. Black, Brother and Sister Homer Black, Brother and Sister Mannie Black, Sister Jessie Buford, Brother and Sister D.D. Chapman, Brother and sister Earnest Cutler, Brother and sister Raymond Dunwood, Brother and sister Robert English, Brother and sister Lloyd Hadley, Brother and sister Martin Simmons, Sister Ada James, Sister Corrine Rollie, Brother and Sister Stevens, Brother and Sister Mark Drummond and sister Florence Williams and family. The ministers who served the congregations between 1939 and 1945 were Lloyd Hadley, Joe Robinson, George Robbins, Russell Moore, John Crooms, Raymond Dunwood and Leonard Bradley and Wilton Cook.
In 1945, Wilton H. Cook became the minister of this congregation. He and his family lived in the rear of the church building which served as the parsonage. Besides his other children, three girls were born during his stay and were named Faith, Hope and Charity. He and his family labored diligently until 1954, when he relocated to the State of Texas.
In 1954, Brother Frank L. Thompson, from the 29th Street Church of Christ in Tampa, Florida became minister of the church. Brother Thompson worked tirelessly to increase membership and as a result of his efforts, the membership outgrew the old building and he oversaw the construction of the current edifice. While the new building was being built the church worshipped in a storefront located on the fourteen hundred block of N.W. 62nd Street.
In 1959, the church returned to the new edifice, and the congregation grew with much enthusiasm and joy. Brother Thompson was well known for his foreign mission work, held many meetings and established congregations throughout Southeast Florida. Some of the men who served the congregations were Elders B.J. Black, Mannie Black, Moses Williams and Henderson Beasley; Deacons Robert Jackson, Martin Simmons, Willie Swindle, Lucious Jackson, Sr., Weldon Holmes, Robert Wiggins, Sr. and Leroy Presley. Brother Willie F. Washington served as assistant minister and R.V. Walker, as church secretary.
Liberty City Church of Christ has helped to establish many congregations, namely Golden Heights in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, Hallandale Church of Christ, Magnolia Park Church of Christ in Opa-Locka, Florida, Brownsville Church of Christ, Nassau-BWI Church of Christ, Palmetto Church of Christ and many others on the east and west coast of Florida. A number of men began their preaching career at Liberty City church of Christ. Some are Brothers John and Clifford Davis, Brother Thomas Campbell, Brother James Wilson, Brother Clyde Rollie, Brother Richard Payne, Brother O.L. Lamar, Brother Cleveland Brown, Brother Hardy Paschal and Brother Henry Ward.
After Brother Thompson’s untimely death in 1977, Brother Freeman T. Wyche, of the Third Ward Church of Christ in Houston, Texas was asked to minister to this congregation. Brother Wyche came to the church in 1978.
In 1983, after several blessed years of growth and change, an ungodly division occurred, resulting in a church split and court battle. But by God’s grace, unity was restored and the church continued to prosper under the preaching and teaching of Brother Wyche.
As the Liberty City Church of Christ moved forward under the leadership of Brother Wyche, the church was fortunate to have Brother Davie Madison, Brother Hardy Paschal and Brother Clarence Webster to assist Brother Wyche in the preaching ministry. Under the leadership of Brother Wyche the church was able to center its focus on a new vision and a new commitment, which allowed the congregation to move into a new building project and remodeling the current building.
Not only was the old edifice being remodeled, but the foresight of Brother Wyche allowed the congregation to acquire the services of Brother Orlander R. Thomas. Brother Thomas relocated to Durham North Carolina as the associate minister of the Southside Church of Christ and upon Brother William Stephens Retirement as Senior Minister Brother Thomas became the Senior Minister.
We commend Minister Wyche for his faithful work in ministry, which he has done in the brotherhood for more than 80 years and for the past 38 years as Minister at the Liberty City Church of Christ in Miami, Florida.
The Liberty City Church of Christ in Miami supports several ministries including, Southwestern Christian College (SWCC) in Terrell Texas an HBCU Christian College, the Haitian Ministry in Port-au-Prince and Port-de-Paix Haiti and Miami, Florida under Minister Jean S. Prudent and more recently the Spanish Ministry, that shares the same building under Ministers Victor Flores, Sr. and his son Victor Flores, Jr.
In the Fall of 2016 Brother Eric W. Doss of the Spencer Church of Christ Oklahoma City, Oklahoma was asked to become the Senior Minister of the Liberty City Church of Christ and Brother Freeman T. Wyche became the Minister Emeritus.
